Every night at 6 pm, Australian news performs the same ritual: dark, grainy CCTV footage of teenagers roaming in groups, testing car doors and scoping houses to rob. A police spokesperson appears looking professionally solemn and disappointed, and a politician promises that they’ll get tough on crime. Then, five minutes later, during the ad break, a major supermarket tells you it’s on your side with its weekly specials while quietly making food more expensive.
